Folia is a fork of Paper that splits the world into regions and ticks each region on its own thread. It is built for large, spread-out player bases on plans with many CPU cores. Most servers should pick Paper.

Folia takes Paper's engine and ticks separate regions of the world in parallel, instead of on one main thread. We sell it as an advanced option, on Heavy plans only, because it needs a plan with at least 4 CPU cores. It is meant for large communities whose players spread across a big map. If your players mostly share the same areas, pick Paper.

Know the trade-offs before you buy. Most Paper and Spigot plugins will not load on Folia: a plugin has to declare Folia support. We sell the newest Minecraft version that has a stable Folia build, which can be older than the newest version of Paper. Each version we sell is boot-verified on our hardware before it goes on sale.

Bedrock crossplay is not available on Folia.

Frequently asked questions

Will my Paper plugins work on Folia?
Most will not. Folia changes how the server ticks the world, so a plugin must declare Folia support to load. Check a plugin's page for Folia support before you buy. If a plugin you need does not support Folia, pick Paper.
Should I pick Folia or Paper?
Most servers should pick Paper. Pick Folia only if you run a large community whose players spread across a big map, you have checked that every plugin you need supports Folia, and you choose a Heavy plan with 4 or more CPU cores.
Why is Folia only on Heavy plans?
Folia works by running regions of the world on separate CPU cores, so it needs a plan with several cores. Heavy plans have 4 or more. We do not sell Folia on smaller plans.
Does Folia support Bedrock crossplay?
No. Bedrock crossplay is not available on Folia.
Can we switch to a different pack later?
Yes. Your dashboard can switch the server to another pack or server type. Take a backup first and the old world stays restorable.
Are backups included?
Yes. Off-site cloud backups are included on every plan, on a configurable hourly to weekly cadence, and your backup space matches your server space.
